Gunk of Low-Energy Living: past

What role is the past playing in your life?

By past, I mean your childhood and last month. I mean decades ago and yesterday. I mean all the relationships of the past and the jobs and places you’ve lived and opportunities you had and did not have. By the past I mean all the unfoldings of all your yesterdays.

What role is your past playing in your life? And more pointedly: Are you limiting your present because of the past?

Too many of us are doing just that.

We are limiting our present because of our past. The past is vibrationally active in our present and so our past is attracting and creating.

The past is past.

The past has no bearing on today or tomorrow unless—and this is a very important unless—you are thinking about the past in a feeling way today.

Because when you are thinking thoughts about the past that cause strong emotion—whether positive or negative—that vibration is your present point of attraction.

For instance, you could be thinking about the loving and supportive relationship you had with a grandparent when you were a child. In your present moment, as you think about that time in the past, you are feeling appreciation for all that love and support.

In this case, those high vibe emotions of appreciation and love and support are your vibrational point of attraction. Your past—because you are activating it in your present with your thoughts and feelings—is creative. And the frequency—the vibration—you are offering is one that will attract more into your life that is aligned with love and support and appreciation.

But let’s say you are thinking about your former marriage. Even though the marriage ended years ago—so it is in the past, you regularly find yourself thinking back and feel resentment and bitterness rise up. Your thoughts very quickly go to the unfair divorce settlement and you feel anger.

This means even though the relationship is in the past and the divorce is in the past, your present-day thoughts cause you to offer a present-day vibration of resentment and anger.

Law of Attraction then responds to the vibration you are offering now with circumstances and conditions that align with your vibration of resentment and anger.

“Whether you are remembering something from your past, imagining something about your future, or observing something in your present, you are offering thought vibrations now that the Law of Attraction is responding to now.” —Abraham

Bottom line: When you thinking feelingly on any subject—whether that subject is about the past, present, or future—when you think feelingly, you are activating a vibration in the present that becomes your vibrational point of attraction.

  • When you think about the past and feel sad, sad is your point of attraction.
  • When you think about the present and feel frustration, frustration is your point of attraction.
  • When your think about the future and feel worry, worry is your point of attraction.

See how that works? You absolutely can only create in your present moment, but it’s up to you how you are using your present moment. It’s up to you the vibration you offer in this present moment—regardless of the past.

“Emotion is vibration. What you give out is what you create.” —Abraham

Of course, the same principle is at work when you think about past, present and future and feel positive emotion.

  • When you think about the past and feel contentment, contentment is your point of attraction.
  • When you think about the present and feel optimistic, optimism is your point of attraction.
  • When you think about the future and feel positive expectation, positive expectation is your point of attraction.

Your only ability to create is in the present moment.

This is your invitation to consider how you are using your present moment. To really consider the vibration you are offering in your present moment.

“We consume our tomorrows fretting about our yesterdays.” —Persius

Really let that land because it’s very much the case for many of us.

The present moment is where all your creative power lies. If you are fretting today about your yesterdays, you are most definitely creating a future you won’t want.

And you can exchange any other low vibe emotion for fret.

So if you are angry about your yesterdays, if you are disappointed, if you are frustrated about your yesterdays, if you are discouraged about your yesterdays—you get the idea…if you are feeling any flavor of low vibe about your yesterdays, then that low vibe is your present day point of attraction.

“We cannot create a new future by holding on to the emotions of the past.” —Joe Dispenza

You can’t create a new future if the vibration you are offering today is aligned with the old emotions. Through the lens of Law of Attraction when you hold on to the emotions of the past—as in you activate those thoughts and feelings today—then that is your present point of attraction.

The first time I encountered this wisdom from Joe— “We cannot create a new future by holding on to the emotions of the past”—I realized I had a choice to make. A choice about how I would think about my past. A choice about the degree to which I would hold on to the emotions of the past.

Actually, it’s a two-fold choice. I could choose to either tell a better-feeling story about my past or I could choose to take my thoughts off the past altogether.

You, of course, have this same choice.

If you want a new future, if you want to be a truly deliberate creator, this means being intentional about how, when, and if you activate the emotions of the past.

“My future isn’t about my past. Nothing that has ever happened has anything to do with now unless, in my now, I continue to think and speak about it. Fresh new thoughts today will always give me a fresh new experience.” —Abraham

I’d like to offer a couple practice guidelines when it comes to ensuring you are not limiting your present with your past.

The guidelines are:

  • Make peace with your past
  • Don’t be limited by your past

Let’s look at each of these, starting with: Make peace with your past

“Sometimes in order to be happy in the present moment you have to be willing to give up all hope for a better past.” —Robert Holden

This single concept has been life changing for a number of my clients. Previously, they had been arguing with the past, fighting it, wanting so much for it to be different.

  • The unhappy childhood.
  • The devastating diagnosis.
  • The unexpected job loss.
  • The relationship ending.

And because they were spending time in the present wishing their past had been different, they were compromising their present-day vibration.

It was only by making peace with their past—yes, I wish it had been different, but it wasn’t, and I’m making my vibrational peace with that—it was only then that they could clean up their present point of attraction.

Do you need to make peace with your past? Have no doubt, this is a meaningful way to clean up your vibration and raise your point of attraction.

Another helpful guideline is: Don’t be limited by your past.

Too many of us believe some circumstance, situation, or event from our past is the reason something is out of reach today or in the future.

  • I didn’t go to college, so…
  • I’ve never been in a long-term relationship, so…
  • Money has always been hard to come by, so…

The so part is where we limit the future because of the past. Money has always been hard to come by, so it will be hard to come by in the future too.

“Never limit your view of life by any past experience.” —Ernest Holmes

You are creating anew in your present moment. Now, of course, you can reactivate the past vibrationally and so recreate along the vibration of the past. But if you want something new and different, then the past need have no bearing on your future.

Choose not to limit your thinking—your beliefs—about what is possible because of the past. Choose not to water down your dreams because of a past experience.

Law of Attraction is responding to the thought vibrations you are offering right now. Fresh new thoughts will give you a fresh new experience.

Live the present you want and create the future you desire by making peace with your past and choosing not to be limited by your past.
