The other day a client shared with me that she might have a scarcity mindset. She said, I love money, but I don’t think money loves me.
You might not describe it exactly that way, but do you have a scarcity mindset?
Often when we think of the word scarcity, money comes to mind, right? But a scarcity mindset looms much larger than only money. For instance…
- Do you have a scarcity mindset about time? About opportunity?
- Do you have a scarcity mindset when it comes to health and wellness?
- Do you have a scarcity mindset about getting new clients or growing your business?
- Do you have a scarcity mindset about jobs in your field? About making a living doing something you enjoy?
- Do you have a scarcity mindset when it comes to love and romance?
Scarcity is about shortage, about lack. There’s not enough out there, there’s not enough to go around. Others are lucky and have what you want. It’s so much easier for everyone else.
A scarcity mindset is a belief that what you want is in short supply, hard to come by, or not available to you.
It really comes down to two simple questions:
- Do you believe your thoughts create your reality?
- And do you believe the Universe is abundant?
Because if your thoughts create your reality—and they do—and you believe the Universe is abundant—and it is—then scarcity simply doesn’t make sense. It’s a non-starter.
“Once you expect something it will come.” —Abraham
Do you want to expect scarcity or abundance?
In theory, I’m sure we all would agree we want to expect abundance, but that’s not what’s actually going on for many of us.
A scarcity mindset could be pervasive across all areas of your life or perhaps it only shows up on a particular subject or two.
For instance, I’ve worked with clients who have a clear and high vibration about money. Financial abundance flows in their lives. Money comes to them in all kinds of ways. They easily and effortlessly attract money.
That’s because their thoughts support abundance. They believe in financial abundance. They allow the abundance in.
They have no limiting beliefs that they don’t deserve money or money is hard to come by. They don’t constrain the Universe with a belief money can only come by one means, one channel—say a paycheck.
They don’t believe efforting and struggle are the price to be paid for the flow of money.
“If you believe that you must work hard in order to deserve the money that comes to you, then money cannot come to you unless you work hard. Financial success, or any other kind of success, does not require hard work. It does require alignment of thought.” —Abraham
They are vibrationally aligned, on a daily basis, with the financial abundance that then flows into their lives.
But…this same person might have a scarcity mindset about time. Her relationship with time is altogether different than her relationship with money. Her alignment is altogether different.
In her mind, there’s never enough time. She has the belief she’s not good at managing her time.
She’s always running late, harried, in a frenzy moving from task to task, meeting to meeting—all the while offering a vibration of friction that simply attracts more circumstances that match up with her scarcity belief about time.
“There is no shortage of money or time. There is no shortage. And any attention to shortage of something wanted will always produce negative emotion within you because your guidance is letting you know that you have strayed from your broader basic understanding of abundance and Well-Being.” —Abraham
There is no shortage. You have strayed from your broader basic understanding of abundance. That’s all!
Your belief in scarcity and limitation holds you apart from the things you want.
Really let that sink in: Your belief in scarcity is keeping you from what you desire.
- Belief and faith in abundance is what allows you to receive abundance.
- Belief in shortage and lack simply attracts more lack.
I want to emphasize: There is no upside to having a scarcity mindset. It’s not protecting you from anything. Maybe you have trained yourself to avoid your expectations being too high.
Know this: A scarcity mindset attracts conditions and circumstances that match up.
Which means a scarcity mindset keeps you living a life of lack.
One of my favorite quotes from Louise Hay is: “Life supports me in every possible way.”
I want you to feel the difference between offering a vibration of scarcity, of not enough, of lack, versus the vibration, the deliciously high vibration of life supports you in every possible way. The Universe supports you.
“Abundance is not something we acquire. It is something we tune into.” —Wayne Dyer
That’s exactly what you do when you shift away from a scarcity mindset. You tune in, with your vibration, to the abundance that is yours, to the abundance that is available to you in countless ways. The abundance of wellness and love, the abundance of money and time, the abundance of joy and freedom.
How are you tuning in? Are you tuning into scarcity or abundance?
I’ll give you a few ways to percolate on that question.
Do you talk about how expensive things are? That is so expensive. I can’t afford that. Can you believe how much she spent for that outfit! Look how much those shoes cost. I can’t believe she spends $5 a day on coffee.
When money falls out of your pocket, do you pick it up because you are desperate for money or because you are appreciative of money? Those are two very different energies, two different vibrations. One feeds scarcity, one feeds abundance.
Are you always looking for the deal? Perhaps you do this because it’s fun for you and feels high vibe. Or it could be because you don’t think you’re worthy of paying full price or that you can afford things unless they are on sale. Again, two different vibrations. One feeds scarcity, one feeds abundance.
Do you judge others for how they spend their money, how they indulge in “luxuries”? Do you think someone is a better person or a lesser person because of how they choose to spend their money?
Do you nickel and dime? Are you pinching pennies at the expense of your vibration? Are you waiting to be generous until you have more money? Are you offering a Scrooge-like vibration of stingy and using the excuse you can’t afford to be generous until you have more to give…thereby ensuring you will never have more to give?
Do you think making a lot of money is counter to helping people? Do you believe if you really want to help and serve others then you shouldn’t want or expect financial abundance?
I could go on. But hopefully it’s becoming clearer for you whether you are tuning into scarcity or abundance.
“If you can take the money out of the equation, and just put the emotion in the equation, now you’ve got it, you see. The money will follow.” —Abraham
We all have beliefs and stories about money. About abundance. About time. About everything.
You have beliefs on all subjects. Some of those beliefs, some of those things you think and say, some of those stories you tell simply do not serve you.
They are not aligned with the life you are wanting to create. They are keeping you in a holding pattern apart from what you want.
“Your prosperity consciousness is not dependent on money; your flow of money is dependent on your prosperity consciousness.” —Louise Hay
Again, don’t overly fixate on the money part. The flow of anything that you want to come into your life IS dependent on your consciousness. On the intentionality of your thinking and feeling on that subject.
If you want to shift from a scarcity mindset to a deep belief in abundance, that is so incredibly possible.
I don’t think you need to go back into your childhood to dig around and figure out where your beliefs originated. I don’t think you need to journal about those old stories of scarcity.
That’s just activating the vibration of unwanted. In fact, I don’t think you need to spend any more time on the beliefs that aren’t serving you.
I simply invite you to pick a few thoughts that reflect an abundance mindset.
An everything-is-always-working-out-for-me, all-is-well, I’m-in-the-downstream-flow-and-the-Universe-is-lining-up-all-those-things-I-want mindset. Pick a few thoughts that align with abundance, and then practice thinking those thoughts and feeling those thoughts so that you align your vibration with prosperity.
Abraham says it’s a flawed premise that money comes to you because of what you do. Rather, Abraham says, “Money and everything else comes to you because of what you think and because of how you feel.”
I’ve been talking a lot about money. But money is not really the point because what I’m saying applies to anything you want, to all the subjects of our life.
What I’m really talking about is shifting from scarcity and lack and unwanted to prosperous and abundant and wanted.
My definition of prosperity is when you are thriving and flourishing in all aspects of your life. Prosperity is not just financial.
“Indeed, you are prosperous to the degree that you are experiencing peace, health, happiness and plenty in your world.” —Catherine Ponder
Catherine is describing true abundance!
Isn’t it amazing and kind of wonderful how the core LoA principles are always the same and there aren’t really that many of them. It’s not like we really need to keep learning more and more and more. We just need to apply what we have learned, what we already know.
If we all just apply what we already know, we would be golden.
We would feel good. We would be the biggest magnets for what we want to attract.
“You have to begin to tell the story of your life as you now want it to be and discontinue the tales of how it has been or of how it is.” —Abraham
Knowing is not enough. It’s the applying part that is key.
Telling the new story. Thinking the new thought. Refusing to indulge in negative emotion. Reaching for better-feeling thoughts. Prioritizing feeling good above all else. Trusting the Universe.
There’s knowing those things, but are you actually doing them?
- Are you telling a new story or are you telling the same old story of lack and scarcity?
- Are you prioritizing feeling good or are you indulging in thoughts that make you feel lousy?
- Are you practicing new thoughts into beliefs or are you saying it’s too hard to change how you think?
If that sounds like a bit of tough love, it is. Because here’s the thing: Nothing changes if nothing changes. That sounds trite, but it is so true.
If you are not willing to think new thoughts and feel better, nothing can really change. Think new thoughts and feel better, rinse and repeat.
Sure, you can effort your way to make some things happen, and you will, but it would be so much easier and so much more enjoyable to shift away from that upstream scarcity mindset to a downstream abundant mindset.
That’s what I want for you.
“We promise you, if you pay the price of happiness…if you are willing to change your thoughts, even though the current reality doesn’t justify the happy thought, it is our promise to you that, if you are able to direct your thought and sustain more positive emotions, that the manifestations you have been seeking must come. And they must come fast! It is Law. It is our absolute promise to you.” —Abraham
There is no scarcity except in your own mind.
If you look around today at the what-is of your current reality and want to catalog all the examples that prove out scarcity in your life, I want to offer this: What you have in your life today was created with your past thinking. Which is wonderful! Because it means your next amazing chapter, which you will create with new thinking, is going to be SOOOO good!
So here’s your takeaway and your To Do: Implement, practice, apply. Take what you already know and go from theory to using it in your real life.
“When you ask, it is given, every single time, no exceptions. You are beloved, blessed Beings who deserve good things, but it takes a self-convincing before you will allow good things.” —Abraham
