Start, Stop & Change: disempowering habitsLife puts obstacles in our path, no doubt. But just as often we get in our own way.

Here are four disempowering habits to drop today.

1. Letting your past predict your future. Your past is just that — past. There doesn’t have to be a straight line from where you’ve been to where you’re going. Yes, there are undoubtedly lessons to learn from your past and wisdom to glean. So learn the lessons, let go, and move on. Glean the wisdom you can take into tomorrow and leave the past behind.

2. Living your life by committee. Taking a poll every time you need to make a decision is no way to live. And it’s a significant barrier to growing your self-confidence. You don’t need to know what others think to know what you think. Start practicing the critical life skill of tuning into your own wants, needs, and values and deciding for yourself.

3. Stopping at I don’t know. It’s OK if you don’t know what type of work would be a better fit or what you want for your next chapter. But it’s not OK to say I don’t know and leave it at that. It’s your life and you’re the leader of it. No one else has your answers. So if you don’t know, today is the day to start figuring it out.

4. Biting off more than you can chew. Is your M.O. to put tasks that would fill an entire week on your list for doing in a day? Trust me, if you’re a high achiever, it’s despite this behavior not because of it. It’s time to start making To Do lists that are actually doable. It’s time to stop setting yourself up for failure and self-flagellation and embrace a sane, sustainable pace instead.

Which of these had you nodding in recognition? Will you make a more empowered choice today?
