Appreciation & Mindset: pessimism

I can’t stop thinking about a quote I read the other day.

“We possess such immense resources of power that pessimism is a laughable absurdity.”

I’ve never really understood pessimism as a point of view. Maybe that’s why the quote resonates.

Believing the worst is waiting around the corner, seeing the glass half empty, expecting things won’t work out… all those ways of looking at the world just seem like a dreadful waste of energy.

They also seem like a choice.

Seeing a glass half empty is laughable when you realize the very same glass is half full.

Half empty. Half full. Same glass. Same amount.

You get to decide what you want to see.

Let’s take a closer read.

We possess

All of us. Not just those special people over there. Or the shiny ones in your Instagram feed. We possess. That’s you, me, your next door neighbor, everyone.

such immense resources of power

It boggles the mind how vast, how colossal, how cosmic are your resources. Think about it: Your imagination can take you anywhere right this minute. Your desire sparks change and reinvention. Your ability to love is infinite. You are wired for growth. You are here and you are capable.

that pessimism is a laughable absurdity.

Choosing to look through a lens of doom and gloom is a wildly unreasonable response to the beauty of life. To the joy of creating. To the tremendousness of being alive.

You have the power…to think a certain way…to choose.

The optimism of half full.
The pessimism of half empty.

Who has time for pessimism when so much is possible?
